"We have seen improvement across the board in the areas of fine motor skills and sensory issues over the three years that my son has received services from IPC. He has increased his tolerance of certain movements (swinging, jumping, etc.) which allows him to fit in better socially with his peers. He has improved his listening and attention skills and is overcoming his aversion to handwriting, thanks to the wide variety of creative approaches implemented by his OT, Debbie Jerome, at IPC. We attribute a great deal of his progress to her and feel that her services are invaluable. JS"

What is Sensory Processing?
All day, everyday, we receive information from our senses to form a "picture" of who we are physically, where we are, and what is going on around us. These sensory experiences include touch, sight, sound, taste, smell, body position, movement, and balance. Sensory integration is the brain's ability to organize and interpret all of this information so we can successfully function in all aspects of daily life at home, work, school, and in our social interactions.
For most children, sensory integration develops naturally during ordinary childhood activities. But for some children, sensory integration does not develop as efficiently as it should. When the process is disordered, a number of problems can develop.
Sensory processing deficits are often misunderstood and can be expressed as academic and behavioral issues in school-aged children. Some children may be overly sensitive to noises, unexpected touch, or highly distracted by visual and auditory input. Performance within a busy classroom may be compromised for these children in attempts to deal with numerous sensory inputs at one time. As a result, behavioral outbursts or withdrawal may occur when their sensory systems become overwhelmed. Others have a poor awareness of where their body is in space, affecting their coordination in gross motor skills as seen in Physical Education or on the playground, and in fine motor skills noted in handwriting. Social interactions within the classroom and on the playground may also be affected.
"IPC was able to evaluate my daughter's therapy needs and create a therapy plan to teach her appropriate ways to cope with frustration. As a result of therapy, she is much better able to cope in most situations. Many areas of frustration for her have completely disappeared. She is thriving in her preschool class and blends in beautifully with the other children The best result of therapy has been her level of happiness. She is happy and enjoying daily life! Five months of OT at IPC made all the difference for her and our entire family. BJ"
